Fifty stolen guardrail components have been recovered and three suspects arrested in connection with the vandalism of road safety infrastructure along the Gulu–Kitgum Highway, authorities have confirmed.
The suspects are accused of tampering with and removing guardrails between Abera Bridge in Unyama Sub-county and Aswa River Bridge in Paicho Sub-county. The incidents reportedly occurred between May 27 and 29, 2026.
According to the Ministry of Works and Transport, the suspects used basic tools to dismantle the safety installations.
“According to Police, the suspects used an adjustable spanner to unfasten guardrail connections and stole road infrastructure assets between Abera Bridge in Unyama Sub-county and Aswa River Bridge in Paicho Sub-county between 27 and 29 May 2026,” the ministry said in a statement posted on X.
The ministry confirmed both the recovery of the stolen materials and the arrests.
“Our teams have recovered 50 stolen guardrail components and confirmed the arrest of three suspects for vandalising road guardrails along the Gulu–Kitgum Highway,” the statement added.
Guardrails are a critical safety feature designed to prevent vehicles from veering off highways, bridges and sharp bends.
Their removal significantly increases the risk of serious and fatal road crashes, particularly on sections of road with steep embankments, water crossings or limited visibility.
The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue into the extent of the vandalism and the value of the stolen infrastructure.
Authorities have urged the public to protect public infrastructure and report any acts of vandalism or suspicious activity that could compromise road safety.
